Socio-psychedelic imaginaries: envisioning and building legal psychedelic worlds in the United States

Abstract After decades of criminalization, psychedelic substances such as psilocybin and LSD are experiencing their comeback in science Western culture more broadly. While plants fungi have a long history use Indigenous cultures, the prohibitionist reality instantiated around 1970 has stigmatized psychedelics medically useless threat to society. Yet studies increasingly demonstrating potential treat widespread mental health conditions PTSD, depression, or anxiety combination with psychotherapy. Most this research is currently taking place US, where additionally decriminalization legalization efforts religious exemptions paved way make legally accessible. Based on 3 years ethnographic US (both in-person virtual), article explores contemporary US-American socio-psychedelic imaginaries, i.e., collective visions articulated enacted reintegrate responsibly into Four imaginaries identified, described, interpreted: biomedicalization imaginary, sacramental imaginary. These diverge converge several politics: politics access, responsibility, naming, assimilation social change, epistemic credibility. Contemporary co-evolving, mutually shaping, amplifying each other. Together they function societal corrective politically motivated prohibition psychedelics. Although by humans, radical imagination expressed its roots human-psychedelics entanglements.
